Reading the Room

When in front of a classroom, skilled teacher can read the room, identifying when students are engaged, frustrated, distracted, etc. In recent years we have seen significant changes traditional with virtual classes becoming normal learning environment. Reasons for this change increased popularity Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and disruptions imposed by ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is difficult teachers to room these classrooms, researchers begun look at using sensors provide feedback help inform teaching practices. The study presented here sought ground classroom sensor data form electrodermal activities (EDA) captured wrist-worn sensing platform (Empatica E4), observations about students' emotional engagement class. We collected dataset from eleven over eight lectures college-level computer science classes. trained human annotators who provided truth information student based on in-class observations. Inspired related work field, implemented an automated analysis framework, which used explore momentary assessments classrooms. Our findings surprised us because found no correlation between our observers' data. paper, present framework assessment, report that indicate some challenges deploying current technology real-world, assessment classroom. offer reflections discuss ways forward toward reading approach.
